Óbidos Lagoon
Flat Water
Shallow and deep areas (perfect for any level and hydrofoiling)
Average 12 - 20 knots of wind
Combination of Nortada (North wind) and thermal wind during the main season
While Portugal is not renowned for super strong winds like Brazil or Egypt, the average wind speeds that we do get could not be more ideal for learners and are ample for riding and developing better technique without the feeling of chaos and things happening too quickly beyond control!
On the West side of the lagoon, where we are based, is the small village of Bom Sucesso. The kite surfing area is divided into 2 parts; Bom Sucesso beach at the top of the lagoon, and further inside the lagoon. These two launching points are just a 5 minute drive apart and depending on conditions and time of year, our kite lessons will be at either one. The decision of the kite lesson location is made by us. While some kitesurfers have their preference of one spot over the other, here is a bit more info about both and some factors that you should all know.
Bom Sucesso Beach
Shallow and sandy, no boots needed
Kiteable in several wind directions
Postcard-perfect views
Huge beach space
However:
Not kiteable at low tides
Strong currents
Less space to ride
Too shallow to foil
Inside the lagoon
Stronger wind than at the beach (thermal plus venturi effect)
More riding space
Kiteable at all tides
Possible to hydrofoil
However:
Limited beach space, especially at spring high tides
Seaweed, rocks and shells (we provide booties for this)
**PLEASE NOTE**
Between June 15th and September 15th each year, kitesurfing is prohibited at Bom Sucesso beach due to the high volume of visitors and bathers in the peak summer period, therefore kite lessons during this time must be inside the lagoon. Kitesurfing is permitted inside the lagoon all year round.
The main season is from April to October, with the most consistent winds from June to September. July and August are the peak months of the season so it’s best to book lessons as early as possible. The wind averages but is not limited to 12 - 20 knots. Generally larger kites are used here. Portugal is not renowned for super strong winds like Brazil or Egypt. It is also possible to kitesurf all year round, however from November to March there’s only a 50% chance of wind. Obviously, the wind is a strong force of nature that can be unpredictable, and it’s not possible for it to be perfectly windy every single day from April to November. It's always best to line up some back-up activities in case the conditions are lacking during your holiday to avoid disappointment. Luckily, this area is full of things to do and see!
